Local Health Brief: Mindful Solutions to Sleep
Nov 02, 2019 11:01AM
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), sleep deprivation affects roughly one third of adults in America. Studies show that sleep deprived-individuals are more likely to suffer from obesity and addictions.
Practicing mindful meditation is one of the most beneficial ways to combat this issue. Focus on the rhythm of the breath and feel it, counting 1, 2, 1, 2, in, out, in, out. This allows us to notice when thoughts begin to veer off and bring them back to the breath.
Another effective technique is to utilize a body scan. Starting at one point of the body, slowly focus on different parts on the opposite side from head to toe. Breath into each area, relax it, let go of the tension and sink into the bed. It may be necessary to repeat it a few times, that’s all part of the learning. Most importantly, be patient and approach this practice without self-judgement or criticism.
